Never drink and drive. This result is a highly individual estimate and cannot be used to judge whether you can drive. Any alcohol remaining in your body is an offence, regardless of elapsed time.

About this tool

The grams of pure alcohol in a drink can be worked out from its volume and ABV. The body metabolizes it over time, but the rate varies greatly between people. This tool shows the pure alcohol and an average estimate of the time to clear it.

Pure alcohol as a health guide

Health guidelines describe higher-risk drinking in terms of daily pure alcohol (for example, thresholds around 40 g for men and 20 g for women in Japan's guidance). A 500 ml 5% beer is about 20 g. Use it to check for overdrinking.

The time is only an estimate

Elimination speed depends on constitution, condition, sex, age and liver function, so the same amount can differ by hours. The time here is an average approximation and does not confirm that alcohol has fully left your body. Avoid driving after drinking and allow ample time and rest.

Frequently asked questions

How is the metabolism time calculated?
+
Pure alcohol (g) = volume (ml) × ABV (%) / 100 × 0.8, and hourly elimination is estimated as weight (kg) × 0.1 g. Time = pure alcohol / rate.

It is only an average estimate.
Does the time vary from person to person?
+
Greatly. Elimination depends on constitution, condition, sex, age, liver function and the day, so the same amount can differ by hours.

This value is an average estimate only.
Can I use this to decide whether to drive?
+
No. Never use it to judge fitness to drive.

Even small amounts impair driving, and any alcohol remaining is an offence. Do not drive after drinking, regardless of time.
What is a unit of pure alcohol?
+
It is the weight in grams of pure alcohol in a drink: volume (ml) × ABV (%) / 100 × 0.8 (alcohol's density).

It is used as a health guideline.
Are my inputs stored?
+
No. All calculation happens in your browser, and the values you enter are never sent to or stored on a server.
Formula & notes
・Pure alcohol (g) = volume (ml) × ABV (%) / 100 × 0.8 (alcohol density)
・Time (h) ≈ pure alcohol / (weight kg × 0.1) (assuming ~0.1 g/kg eliminated per hour)
・Alcohol pharmacokinetics has several models (e.g. Widmark) with a range of coefficients; this is a simple average approximation.
・Pure-alcohol health thresholds refer to public health guidance.
Please note (important)
This site does not represent any medical or public body and does not guarantee the accuracy of the results. The metabolism time is a highly individual estimate and does not indicate that no alcohol remains. Never use it to judge fitness to drive. Consult a physician or professional for decisions about drinking and health.
