Training Frequency and Splits: How Often to Train and How to Divide Body Parts

"How many times a week should I go to the gym?" "Do I train the whole body in one session, or split it across days?" — these are questions almost everyone runs into. The answer depends on your available days, your goal, and your recovery capacity. This guide sorts out how frequency, volume, and splits relate, so you can pick a weekly plan that fits your life.

How frequency, volume, and splits relate

When planning a program, first get three terms straight.

For hypertrophy, the total weekly volume (total sets) is the most important factor, and for the same total, many reports find that spreading it over two sessions a week beats cramming it into one. Think of a split as the tool for adjusting "frequency" and "load per session" to match the number of days you can actually attend.

Decide "days you can attend" first: the reliable way to pick a split is to work backward from the number of days a week you can realistically keep up, not from the goal. A perfect 6-day split won't run if you only make it twice a week.

How many times a week should you train?

For beginners to intermediates, stimulating each body part twice a week tends to balance growth and consistency well. As a guide for total weekly frequency:

More is not automatically better. If recovery can't keep up, gains plateau and injury or stagnation follows. Even 2–3 days a week is plenty to grow, provided you train hard enough and recover.

Common types of splits

Full-body

One session covers the main parts — chest, back, legs and so on. Its biggest strength is that you can stimulate each part at high frequency (2–3 times a week), making it ideal for people with few weekly days and for beginners. Because you touch the whole body even with one exercise each, it's also easy to make up for a missed day.

Upper/lower split

You divide into an "upper-body day" and a "lower-body day." With fewer parts per session, you can add more exercises and sets per part, and at four days a week you still keep each part at twice a week. It's the go-to for intermediates stepping up from full-body.

Body-part split

You split by body part, like a "chest day" and a "back day." A classic example is push (chest/shoulders/triceps) / pull (back/biceps) / legs, where six days a week keeps each part at twice a week. You can hammer one part intensively, but note that if you can't secure the weekly frequency, each part drops to once a week and it gets hard to accumulate volume.

Choosing a split by goal and frequency

It's not about "which is correct" but about whether you can run it on your available days.

When you raise frequency (balancing recovery)

The more you raise frequency and volume, the more recovery matters. When stimulating the same part on consecutive occasions, a common guide is to leave at least about 48 hours. If signs that recovery isn't keeping up appear (chronic fatigue, weights not going up, lost motivation), dial frequency or volume back a notch. Nutrition and sleep are the foundation of recovery.

The order to add: when you stall, rather than jumping straight to more frequency, adjust in the order ①weight/reps per exercise → ②total weekly sets → ③frequency, a little at a time, so you progress without breaking recovery.

There's no single correct split. First decide the days a week you can attend, then aim for each part twice a week, developing gradually from full-body → upper/lower → body-part split.
